Project Overview
Toyota Motor Sales, Portland Vehicle Distribution Center — Portland, Oregon
Toyota confronted the extremely energy intense activity of vehicle processing with a comprehensive commitment to strategic environmental improvement. Toyota’s emphasis on operational efficiency, rigorous accountability, and cutting-edge technology signifi cantly reduced the company’s energy costs even though the new facility processes more vehicles than the old building. Initiatives included:
- Adherence to in-house “Process Green” requirements
- Skylights and energy-effi cient lighting
- Occupancy controls
- Energy recovery
- Natural ventilation
- Facility Integrated Resource Management (FIRM)
- Green power
- Restoration of waterfront
- Rainwater harvesting
Results
“The facility recycled 96 percent of its materials last year. We only had an average of 6 ounces of waste to landfi ll per vehicle— that’s about the size of a Hershey bar.” —Ron Corbin National Logistics Manager Toyota Logistics ServicesEnergy consumption has been reduced by 33 percent and water consumption by 75 percent compared to typical structures of the same type. Actual energy costs dropped more than US$30,000 per year after moving to the new facility. Building operations managers now use a number of real-time monitoring systems to make informed decisions about system management and upgrades.
