Bass Pro Shops is a national retail chain of outdoor sporting gear.
As a supporter of multiple conservation leaders including the USDA
Forest Service, the Nature Conservancy, and the National Fish and
Wildlife Foundation, Bass Pro is also committed to reducing the impact
of their retail buildings.

RMI/ENSAR served as a
sustainable design consultant to Bass Pro for several stores across the
United States and provided input on building envelope design
strategies including daylighting, glazing, and shading options.
BNIM Architects
With five offices in the western continental United States, BNIM Architects
concentrates on architectural design, sustainability, and research in
innovative approaches to building techniques. Working mostly in the
Midwest, BNIM Architects has completed over 200 projects spanning from
civic facilities to landscape architecture.Project: Missouri Department of Natural Resources, Lewis & Clark State Office Building
The Lewis & Clark State Office Building, located in Jefferson City, Missouri, houses more than 380 employees of the Missouri Department of Natural Resources (MODNR). The project, spearheaded by department staff and supported as part of the city’s urban redevelopment program, is intended to serve as a financial and educational model for future government projects in Missouri. RMI/ENSAR participated in design charrettes, provided daylighting analysis and energy design strategies, and assisted with LEED documentation for the project. MODNR became the first Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum rated state government building in the United States. Brock USA
Brock USA is a company that has patented and developed a high
performance drainage and impact layer that replaces the stone and
padding underlayments that are commonly used underneath synthetic turf.
Project: Synthetic Turf-Underlayment Impact Assessment
RMI partnered with the ATHENA Institute to conduct a comparative Life
Cycle Assessment (LCA) of two synthetic turf systems: one synthetic
turf system incorporating Brock USA's polypropylene underlayment
product and the other using a more conventional stone aggregate base.
The objective of the LCA was to provide Brock USA analyses of their
manufacturing process in order to identify opportunities for reducing
environmental impact and opting for the most environmentally sound
construction technique.
Carney Architects
Established in 1992, Carney Architects is an architectural firm located
in Jackson, Wyoming focusing on architecture that improves the
environment and showcases natural splendor in order to distribute their
commitment to environmental design and quality.
Project: Laurance S. Rockefeller (LSR) Preserve Visitor Center
LSR Preserve, located in the Grand Teton National Park, is a 7,600 sq.
ft. visitor center near Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Using LEED as a framwork, RMI drove the high-performance
building efforts alongside the architect and design team. The building
earned all 17 LEED energy points and recently earned a Platinum rating
under the LEED for New Construction v2.1 Rating System.
Cherokee Investment Partners
Cherokee is a leading private equity firm investing capital and
expertise in brownfield redevelopment. Cherokee has invested in more
than 525 properties worldwide, taking them from contaminated,
underutilized sites to developments that add economic, environmental,
and social benefits to communities.
Project: Met Gardens
Metropolitan Gardens is a new 40-acre development located minutes from
downtown Denver by car or light rail. The transit-oriented, mixed-use
project aims to create a distinctive urban community that
encourages sustainable living through mass transit,
pedestrian-oriented circulation, energy and water efficiency, green
materials, and waste reduction systems. RMI facilitated a sustainable
design charrette to evaluate opportunities within the project’s master
plan, set site-wide performance goals, establish a process of
integrated design, and identify green building strategies. RMI’s report
is being used as a roadmap in the implementation of environmental goals
during the design and construction process.
Project: Faubourg Boisbriand
Located in Montreal, Canada, this 235-acre brownfield site, remediated
and master planned by Cherokee Investment Partners, will include
retail, residential and industrial development. RMI facilitated a
sustainability charrette to assist Cherokee in the creation of
development guidelines. The charrette focused on both short-term
upgrades and long-term goals with an outcome to incorporate greater
sustainability in future phases.
The Clinton Foundation
The William J. Clinton Foundation comprises six initiatives
geared towards increasing the well being of humanity and the planet.
With offices in New York and Arkansas, as well as staff around the
world, the foundation is making large-scale impact through global
outreach.
Project: Clinton Library
The William J. Clinton Presidential Center houses the largest
collection of American presidential archival material. In addition to
the library holdings, the 155,000 square foot facility also contains
20,000 square feet of exhibit space.
RMI provided effective light design strategies and daylighting analysis
while focusing on the indoor environmental quality of the building. The
Clinton Library received a LEED EB Platinum rating and President
Clinton was awarded the plaque at 2007 Greenbuild conference in
Washington D.C.
Project: Clinton Climate Initiative
The Clinton Climate Initiative (CCI) has set a long-term goal of encouraging whole-systems building retrofits in many of the
world’s largest cities. Following the HIV/AIDS-drug model developed by
the Clinton Hunter HIV/AIDS Initiative (CHAI), the Clinton Foundation
is helping link vendors with buyers, creating a larger market for
energy-efficient technologies. CCI is engaging Energy Service Companies
(ESCOs) as the primary implementers of the retrofits. ESCOs not only
have the global capacity to complete massive retrofits, but can also
guarantee savings through the performance-based contracts. RMI is
assisting the Clinton Foundation in the implementation of the Clinton
Climate Initiative providing both high-level strategic consulting and
individual project support.

Project: The Energy Challenge: A New Agenda for Corporate Real Estate
As
part of the Cooling the Warming Initiative, RMI collaborated with
CoreNet Global to research the barriers and enablers for the
incorporation of greater energy-efficiency measures in corporate real
estate. The advisory panel for this project featured executives from
Toyota, Adobe, ABN AMRO, Johnson Controls, Microsoft, and several

Project: Deutsche Bank Headquarters
Deutsche
Bank is renovating their Headquarter office towers in Frankfurt,
Germany to improve building performance and occupant comfort standards.
RMI reviewed project documents, performed daylighting and energy
analysis, and ranked proposed as well as new opportunities based on
investment costs relative to estimated performance impact for the
office towers.
Duke University
Duke University is a private university located in Durham, North
Carolina. Founded in 1838, Duke is committed to examining the actual
and potential environmental impacts associated with their activities
and services in order to continually improve environmental performance.
Project: Duke Campus
Duke is seeking to create leadership in environmental sustainability
and stewardship throughout their campus, medical institutions, and the
larger community of Durham. RMI participated in a peer review of the
central campus redevelopment design, as well as helped to review
sustainability goals.
EDAW
EDAW approaches the built environment with a fusion approach and an
emphasis on design, economics, planning, environmental awareness,
community integration, and information technology services. With a
network of 34 offices worldwide, EDAW offers a broad and specialized
perspective on sustainable design and has been consistently ranked
among the world’s leading design firms.
Project: Ladera Ranch
Ladera Ranch is a
planned community located in the boundaries of Rancho Mission Viejo in
Orange County, California. RMI/ENSAR provided sustainable consulting
services to EDAW, including developing criteria for the “Green
Development Program” and providing training and coordination for energy
analysis.
EPA
The mission of the Environmental Protection Agency is to protect human health and the environment. Since 1970, EPA has been working for a cleaner, healthier environment for the American people. The agency employs 17,000 people across the country, at its headquarters offices in Washington, DC, 10 regional offices, and more than a dozen labs.
Project: EPA Region 8 Headquarters
The EPA Region 8 Headquarters is located in Denver, Colorado. The
280,000-square-foot office building highlights experimental green roof
technology, a photovoltaic array, and advanced daylighting
technologies. RMI provided LEED consulting services for the recently
completed project that is targeting a LEED-Gold rating under the New
Construction v2.1 Rating System.
Eppstein Uhen Architects
Located in Milwaukee and Madison, Eppstein Uhen Architects is one of
Wisconsin’s largest and most diverse architectural firm. Employing over
150 people and registered in 45 states, Eppstein Uhen Architects have
an extensive portfolio of paramount projects.
Project: Wisconsin Energy Conservation Corporation Headquarters (WECC)
The new WECC office building houses over 80 employees working with
government agencies, utilities, and energy consumers to deliver
cost-effective energy-saving strategies. A 19 kW roof-mounted
photovoltaic system is expected to provide 39 percent of the building’s
electrical load. RMI provided sustainable design consulting and
comprehensive LEED coordination for the building, which, when
certified, will be the state’s first LEED Gold building.
Federal Energy Management Program
As the largest energy consumer in the United States, the federal
government firmly believes that they must lead by example in smart
energy management. The Federal Energy Management Program helps agencies
save taxpayer dollars, use less energy, and demonstrate the ample
possibilities in investing in renewable and clean energy technologies.
Project: White House
The Greening of the White House, a comprehensive, multi-year project,
was designed to improve energy efficiency and reduce waste. RMI/ENSAR
assisted in providing strategies to improve the thermal performance of
the facility. As a result, the White House replaced 98 percent of their
windows, installed a new roof for the Executive Residence, changed
incandescent lamps to compact fluorescent lights, and replaced
skylights in the stairwells and corridors to provide a better use of
natural light. These energy-efficient innovations reduced electricity
use by 20 to 75 percent per installment, improved lighting quality and
occupant comfort, reduced glare, and in just the improvements of
lighting fixtures alone saved approximately$130,000 annually.
Ferraro Choi Architects
For the last 20 years, Ferraro Choi Architects has been mastering
environmentally consciousness architecture and implementing research.
Located in Honolulu, Hawaii, Ferraro Choi Architects is internationally
acknowledged for architectural services in sustainable design.
Project: University of Hawaii Coconut Island (Institute of Marine Biology)
Coconut Island, located off of Oahu, is home to the University of
Hawaii’s Institute of Marine Biology wet-lab facility. RMI is providing
design services for a series of low-impact buildings designed around
daylighting, mechanical needs, and renewable energy systems.
Project: University of Hawaii Culinary Institute
The University of Hawaii is building a 32,000-square-foot Culinary
Institute on a 7.9-acre site at the Diamond Head campus in Honolulu on
the island of Oahu.The facility will include a signature restaurant,
instructional and operation spaces, food demonstration, competition and
entertainment spaces, a gift shop, an advanced culinary lab, a library,
learning workrooms, several classrooms, and many kitchens. RMI
assisted in sustainable design consulting, including energy,
daylighting and LEED certification.
RMI was part of a multi-consultant team led by Ferraro Choi Architects to research the occupant, environmental, and economic benefits of high-performance schools for the State of Hawaii. RMI/ENSAR developed and implemented an online survey tool to solicit information from 12 high-performance schools in Hawaii about the economic, environmental, and occupant benefits of sustainable design and LEED certification in elementary, middle, and high schools. The team also developed a life cycle cost calculator to compare the economic benefits of a green school against a conventional school. Finally, the team developed implementation guidelines for the State, advising on strategies to incorporate high-performance requirements in new and existing schools.
Freelon Group
The Freelon Group is a 56-member architectural firm located in
Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina. Founded in 1990, the firm offers
specialized design expertise for museums, cultural centers, higher
education buildings, and sciene and technology facilities.
Project: Durham County Health Services Center
The Durham County Human Services Complex is a new large-scale urban
development for the East Main Street corridor of downtown Durham. The
Freelon Group, with the help of RMI, is incorporating high performance
building strategies into the design for the Durham County Human
Services Complex. This building will provide superior indoor air
quality as well as natural daylighting via under floor air distribution
systems and interior light wells, resulting in a 30 to 40 percent overall
energy reduction.
General Growth Partners
General Growth Partners (GGP) is a publicly traded Real Estate
Investment Trust, which owns, develops, and manages 44 shopping malls
and Master Planned Communities in three states. Employing over 4,700
people nationwide, GGP has been buying and developing real estate since
1954.
Project: Summerlin Centre
The 105-acre
Summerlin Centre mixed-use core under development by GGP will serve as the town center and the
heart of the much larger 22,500-acre master-planned Summerlin
community. RMI is currently working with GGP and the rest of the design
team to begin the LEED certification process for Phase One of the
development, which includes 370,000 square feet of retail and 1,200,000 square
feet of office space. At completion, it is expected that the development
will also include two hotels, and one million square feet of
residential development.
H & L Architecture
Based in Denver and Colorado Springs, H + L Architecture focuses on sustainable design
principles in the science, technology, and corporate sectors.
Project: University of Denver Ricketson Law Building
The University of Denver's College of Law houses one of the nation's
top environmental and natural resource law programs. Designing a new
"green" facility—one that reduces environmental impact and prioritizes
occupant safety—was an opportunity for the University to implement
strategies that are consistent with its academic mission. RMI/ENSAR
provided comprehensive sustainable design consulting, including
daylighting analysis, advanced energy modeling, and coordination of
Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) documentation. The
College of Law is the first LEED Gold rated law school in the nation.

Kallman McKinnell and Wood
Kallmann McKinnell & Wood Architects, Inc. is a Boston-based firm offering comprehensive design services including feasibility studies, programming, master planning, architectural design, interior design and landscape architecture.
Project: Jefferson City Federal Courthouse
In the greening of this federal courthouse, RMI will facilitate in the
formulation of workshops and document reviews to assist the design team
and optimize the whole building performance.
Kennecott Land Company
Kennecott Land Company, a sister company of Kennecott Utah Copper (a
subsidiary of Rio Tinto Mining), was formed in 2001 to develop land
holdings along the Oquirrh Mountain Range in the Salt Lake Valley.
Today, Kennecott is moving ahead with the development of these holdings
(approximately 93,000 acres).
Project: Daybreak
Daybreak is the first of several communities to be developed by
Kennecott Land Company in the Salt Lake Valley. RMI is currently
working with Kennecott to host homebuilder and commercial building
design charrettes for selected Daybreak projects, to create benchmarks
for energy and water performance of existing homes, and to research a
zero-net-energy framework for the development. The Daybreak project is

Kisco
Since 1990, Kisco Senior Living has been specializing in full-service senior living communities throughout California, Nevada, Virginia, North Carolina, and Florida.
Project: Kisco Senior Living Center
With a portfolio more than 20 properties encompassing 3,600 dwelling units
across the country, Kisco Senior Living is a company that provides
full-service rental accommodation for senior citizens. RMI is providing
sustainability consulting services, including building-specific and
portfolio-wide strategies. RMI conducted high-level walkthroughs of
four Kisco properties identifying opportunities for improved green
operations including energy efficiency, waste management, recycling,
green materials and housekeeping. A recent charrette involved
brainstorming corporate sustainability goals, strategies, challenges
and success factors with the Kisco senior leadership team.
Kitson & Partners
Kitson & Partners, headquartered in West Palm Beach, Florida, is a renowned international real estate company focused on the development and management of new communities, office, industrial, and retail spaces.
Project: Babcock Ranch
Babcock Ranch consists of 91,000 acres of land in Southwest Florida,
17,000 of which will be developed into a walk-able, hike-able,
bike-able model community for the 21st century. RMI is working with
Kitson & Partners to research energy investment strategies for the
19,500-person new town.
MGM MIRAGE EESD
With more than 70,000 employees and 24 destinations, MGM MIRAGE is expanding their presence in the domestic and international markets. Their luxurious resorts and casinos are distributed throughout Nevada, Mississippi, Michigan, New Jersey, Illinois, and Macau.
Project: MGM MIRAGE
Since May 2007, RMI has been working with MGM MIRAGE's Energy &
Environmental Services Division to assess the corporation's
environmental footprint. By analyzing the company's building stock
(including the in-construction seventy-six acre CityCenter project) and
corporate operations; RMI is helping the casino conglomerate establish
benchmarks for energy and water use that will serve as metrics for
future projects. RMI is also working with MGM MIRAGE to identify
strategic opportunities to reduce their environmental footprint. This
scope includes the development of a comprehensive clean energy policy
that covers energy efficiency and clean energy projects to reduce
greenhouse gas emissions.
Morgan Creek Ventures
Morgan Creek Ventures is a Boulder-based development firm focused on
sustainable development in urban areas. RMI has partnered with Morgan
Creek on several projects in Boulder including the fit-out of two
RMI-Boulder office spaces.
Project: The Walnut
The Walnut is a thirty-four-unit condominium development located in
downtown Boulder, Colorado. RMI worked to identify opportunities for
improving the build-out of The Walnut’s office space and multi-family
residential components.
Project: RMI offices at 1215 Spruce Street
RMI’s
first Boulder location, a 2,700-square-foot office space in the heart
of downtown Boulder, was in the historic 1215 Spruce Street building.
Morgan Creek, the building owner, worked with RMI to create a LEED for
Commercial Interiors Platinum project. A case study of RMI’s 1215

Project: RMI offices at 1820 Folsom Street
In February of 2008, RMI moved their Boulder offices from 1215 Spruce
to 1820 Folsom Street. Morgan Creek, the landlord for both facilities,
partnered with RMI to ensure 1820 Folsom met RMI’s programming and
sustainability goals.
National Park Service
The National Park Service has 400 national parks extending over the
United States and the U.S. foreign territories of Guam, American Samoa,
Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. Comprised of a working team of
archaeologists, architects, curators, historians, and other cultural
resource professionals, the National Park Service focuses on preserving
and protecting some of the last open spaces and significant landmarks
in the world.
Project: U.S. National Park Projects
RMI has provided sustainable design consulting, energy and daylight
analysis, charrette facilitation, as well as LEED advising and coordination
for numerous projects for the National Park Service. These projects are
excellent examples of integrated design showcasing passive,
climate-responsive architecture, energy-efficient mechanical and
electrical systems, renewable power generation, water-efficient
plumbing, and native landscaping. Projects include the Beaver Meadows
Visitor Center located in Rocky Mountain National Park, the Carlsbad
Caves Visitor Center in New Mexico, the Denali Entrance area and
Eielson Visitors Center in Denali National Park Alaska, the Apgar
Transit Center servicing West Entrance visitors to Glacier National
Park in northern Montana, and the facility serving visitors to the Kohm
Yah-mah-nee Visitors Center at the southwest entrance of Lassen
Volcanic National Park in California.
Oak Hill Fund
Located in Charlottesville, Virginia, Oak Hill Fund has been
promoting sustainable housing and community building programs through
effective grantmaking and action-oriented initiatives.
Project: Sustainable Affordable Housing
The
Oak Hill fund provided a grant to RMI to host a charrette focused on
sustainable affordable housing. RMI invited five experts from the
affordable housing industry to RMI’s Boulder office to discuss
opportunities and barriers to incorporating greater sustainability into
affordable housing. RMI’s final report assembled topical researched as
well as conveyed the barriers to implementing sustainability in
affordable housing. RMI plans to continue to work with the invited
experts to overcome these obstacles to make affordable houses truly
more affordable.
OZ Architecture
Since 1964, OZ Architecture has provided architectural design
services to local, national and international clients. Quoted as the
largest architectural firm in Colorado (Denver Business Journal) and
also in the top fifty largest architectural firms in the United States,
OZ Architecture has extensive design experience across a spectrum of
building types.
Project: Kigali, Rwanda Master Plan
Kigali, the capital city of Rwanda, has goals to reinvent itself as the
technological—yet sustainable—hub of Africa. OZ Architecture, the
lead for the master planning team, brought RMI into the project team to
provide recommendations regarding basic energy infrastructure,
transportation, and building design.
Rafael Viñoly Architects
Founded in New York in 1983, Rafael Viñoly Architects has affiliate
offices in Los Angeles and London. Internationally recognized for
paramount architectural projects around the globe, this firm has
designed cultural and civic complexes, laboratories, and master plans.
Project: Pennsylvania State University Materials and Life Sciences II Building
Pennsylvania State University is building a new 345,000-square-foot
Materials and Life Sciences Building. RMI is providing holistic
sustainable design consulting services, including LEED consulting,
energy modeling, and daylight analysis.
RB+B Architects
RB+B Architects has been designing Colorado Public Places and Learning Spaces for over 50 years. The firm is committed to client-focused quality design combined with an equally high level of service.
Project: Fossil Ridge High School
Fossil Ridge High School was the first secondary education school in
Colorado to achieve a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design
(LEED) Silver rating. During design, the Poudre School district
emphasized energy efficiency with strict attention to siting,
orientation, construction details, and proper equipment sizing.
RMI/ENSAR provided daylighting design and sustainable design consulting

With more than
6,500 stores, retail giant Wal-Mart employs 1.9 million associates and serves approximately 180
million customers a year.
Project: Wal-Mart
In assisting one of the world’s largest corporations, RMI is helping
Wal-Mart understand the environmental and economic benefits of incorporating
energy efficient principles into business strategies. RMI has assisted
in a wide range of projects for Wal-Mart including daylighting, fleet
